What is Math Difficulty?
Math difficulty or Dyscalculia is a term that refers to a range of difficulties with maths that include weaknesses in understanding numbers and difficulty applying mathematical concepts and principles to solve problems. Dyscalculia is a math learning disability that impairs an individual’s ability to learn number-related concepts, perform accurate math calculations, reason and problem solving and perform other basic math skills.
Signs and Symptoms
Some of the typical symptoms of dyscalculia include:
Difficulties with processing numbers and quantities including:
- Connecting a number to the quantity it represents (the number 2 to two apples)
- Counting, backwards and forwards
- Comparing two amounts
- Trouble with subitizing (recognize quantities without counting)
- Trouble recalling basic math facts (like multiplication tables)
- Difficulty linking numbers and symbols to amounts
- Trouble with mental math and problem-solving
- Difficulty making sense of money and estimating quantities
- Difficulty with telling time on an analog clock
- Frequent school absences
- Poor visual and spatial orientation
- Difficulty immediately sorting out direction (right from left)
- Troubles with recognizing patterns and sequencing numbers
- Difficulty counting backwards
- Trouble remembering the basic facts
- Weak mental arithmetic skills
- Slow to do sums or perform calculations
- Poor sense of numbers and estimation
- Addition is most often the default arithmetic operation
- Difficulty understanding place value
- High levels of math anxiety

- On first consultation which is free, one of our experts will discuss about the child and his/her requirements and will decide on whether an assessment is required or not.
- If assessment is required, the expert will discuss the payment and time involved and then fix a schedule for the first assessment.
- On the first assessment, we do a comprehensive assessment of your child’s math difficulty using various time-tested strategies and methods to confirm the presence of the difficulty and to determine its intensity.
- Based on our assessment and evaluation, a second consultation (free of cost) will be scheduled and the report of the assessment will be discussed with much emphasis on what needs to be done and the parents will be given options which include self-training, IEP support, online coaching, mentoring support and counselling.
- Based on the parents’ requirement, a coach or mentor is allotted to assist the child with the process.
- An IEP or Individualized Education Plan for the child will be designed by our special educators. The parent or teacher will be educated / trained on how to use the IEP effectively to train the child.
- At this juncture too, parents can choose whether they want to self-coach or opt for trainer-assisted coaching.
- Counselling is also an integral part of the process whereby our specialized child counselors offer the right support, guidance, and advice as and when required by the parent, teacher or the child.
- All the components of the process including consultation, assessment, evaluation, IEP designing, coaching, training, mentoring, and counselling will take place through the online platform. We will guide you from the beginning to the end and ensure the child is adequately trained to attain his/her personal and academic goals.

- Assessment is a gathering of relevant information about an individual’s areas of strengths and challenges to determine whether he or she may have a disability or a disorder or a unique ability.
- The child will be evaluated for the disorder by reviewing academic records and performance in standardized tests, knowing about family history, and learning more about how the child’s difficulties manifest in school and everyday life.
- One of the main indicators of dyscalculia is the inability to subitise. The word ‘subitise’ comes from the Latin word ‘subito’ which means suddenly. It refers to our ability to immediately recognise the number of items in a set without having to actually count them. Most people can subitise up to six or seven items. A learner with dyscalculia will not be able to do this and may have difficulty in subitising even just three items.
- Checklists are simple and quick to administer and are often the first option to consider when trying to identify dyscalculia.
- The probable next step after completing a checklist is to administer a dyscalculia screener. There are several options to choose from.
- We can test to assess verbal and visual IQ, working memory, and processing speed. These quantitative assessments need to be interpreted alongside more qualitative assessments to gain a complete picture of the child’s profile.

- Research shows that the most successful math interventions are explicit and systematic. One way to do that is to verbalize thought processes. In other words, as students think about how to solve a problem, probe them to say what they are thinking aloud. It is important here to listen patiently and without judgment even if their mathematical language is inexact or their reasoning is imperfect.
